Crowns, Inlays, and Onlays
Sometimes cavities grow so large that a filling can't restore optimal strength to the tooth. Significant cracks and chips also create issues that a filling can't repair. In these situations, crowns, inlays, and onlays may be your best option. Dr. Chris or Dr. Matt will determine the most effective and conservative treatment for your case.
A crown covers the entire surface of the tooth that extends above the gum line. An inlay covers the chewing surface of the tooth. An onlay covers the chewing surface of the tooth and then extends down one side of the tooth.
These solid porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or all-metal restorations provide strength that a filling cannot. Because crowns, inlays, and onlays are made in a dental lab, expect two visits for the entire procedure.
